Genetically Modified Foods And Organic Foods - 1637 Words
I am writing this letter to express my interest in discussing the subject of genetically modified foods and organic foods. I leaned towards this topic because I firmly believe that genetically modified foods may affect the publicââ¬â¢s health; as well as, believe that this process involves animal cruelty. Although food is tested for safety before it goes out in the market, there is no solid proof of a long-term study. It is possible that health risks may arise, although not immediately, but over time. From my current understanding, genetically modified food is artificially altered from experimentation. Doing so, helps farmers grow a greater yield and, therefore, helps such business. Another sensitive topic known related to this subject is the mistreatment to the animals that are involved in this process. Factory farming provides poor livestock conditions in order to have higher productivity. I hope to become better educated while researching and considering all aspects in this topic. Topics always consist of pros and cons; therefore, I look forward to considering this issue from the ethical, political, and health risks standpoint. Revenge in Emily Bronteââ¬â¢s Wuthering Heights Free Essays
Wuthering Heights ââ¬â Revenge Emily Bronte, who never had the benefit of former schooling, wrote Wuthering Heights. Bronte has been declared as a ââ¬Å"romantic rebelâ⬠because she ignored the repressive conventions of her day and made passion part of the novelistic tradition. Unlike stereotypical novels, Wuthering Heights has no true heroes or villains. Oââ¬â¢Malleyââ¬â¢s quote reflects Heathcliffââ¬â¢s immature need to propagate agony in those who have offended him. Heathcliffââ¬â¢s plan for revenge on Edgar and Catherine is to marry Isabella, who is ignorant of love and of men because she has never experienced either. He wants to hurt Edgar because of his marriage to Catherine, and he wants to get revenge on Catherine by making her jealous. Catherineââ¬â¢s death proves that this flawed plan of repayment helps nothing. Heathcliff, haunted by the ghost of Catherine because he is her ââ¬Å"murderer,â⬠still is motivated by the need for revenge and tries to get young Cathy away from Edgar by having her marry his son, Linton. Heathcliff never finds peace until he gives up his plan for revenge just before he dies. When Heathcliff gives up his plan for revenge, he meets Catherine in death and truly becomes happy once more. Catherineââ¬â¢s revenge does not make things better for her. Herà revenge on Heathcliff by blaming him for her upcoming death does not meliorate her mind. Just before she dies, she ascribes Heathcliff for her ââ¬Å"murder. à à ââ¬Å"You have killed me, and thriven on it, I thinkâ⬠(Bronte 158). Catherine resembles what Oliver Goldsmith said,à ââ¬Å"When lovely woman stoops to folly, and finds too late that men betray, what charm can soothe her melancholy? What art can wash her guilt away? The only art her guilt to cover, To hide her shame from every eye, To give repentance to her lover, And wring his bosom, isââ¬âto dieâ⬠(Oliver Goldsmith 1). Catherineââ¬â¢s death is caused by her lack of emotional control and her dual personalities. She and Heathcliff ââ¬Å"areâ⬠each other (Bronte 80), but her wants of social status and popularity draw her toward Edgar (Bronte 78). She does not love Edgar, but her selfish material wants control her. Catherineââ¬â¢s revenge on Heathcliff does not assist her in finding happiness. She looks forward to dying and isà ââ¬Å"wearying to escape into that glorious worldâ⬠(Bronte 160). Her death is, however, miserable as she wanders around the earth as a waif for 20 years occasionally visiting Heathcliff and torturing him. Just as Heathcliff and Catherineââ¬â¢s revenge make them miserable, Hindleyââ¬â¢s revenge on Heathcliff causes him to go bankrupt and eventually die. Hindleyââ¬â¢s attempt to kill Heathcliff only hurts himself in the process;à it proves the point Isabella makes, ââ¬Å"Treachery and violence are spears pointed at both ends; they wound those who resort to them worse than their enemiesâ⬠(Bronte 177). The fact that Hindley is mistreated as a child reflects the built up anger and resentment inside him and towards others. The hurt that Hindley feels is clearly understood, but sympathy for Hindley is only temporary because it is still his own fault for his predicaments. Hindleyââ¬â¢s loss of Wuthering Heights to Heathcliff and his mysterious death reflect how revenge does not make anything better, only worse. Bronte corroborates that revenge is not only a harsh and rash way to live life, but is counter-productive and hurtful. Out of all of her major themes, revenge is the most imminent. The self-hurt involved with vengeance shows there are better ways to solve conflicts. Bronte sends a great message across by showing how negative revenge can be. The Problem with Labeling Essay When I think of ââ¬Å"labeling,â⬠I have a particular story that I remember as a child and young teenager that fits this paper well. Although the name I have chosen to use for this story is different, the rest of the story is how I remember it and also how I perceived that others spoke about it. My best friend growing up was named Mike. He was a black kid that I first met in the second grade. We quickly became good friends and enjoyed playing together at school, soccer practice, and eventually at our homes. I lived in a middle class neighborhood and Mike lived in a lower class neighborhood that was very close to mine. We became quickly inseparable and generally rode bikes together in either of our neighborhoods. At such a young age I didnââ¬â¢t realize what family troubles were so until later in life I wasnââ¬â¢t able to put these things completely into perspective. I knew that Mikeââ¬â¢s mother held a good job as that is what Mike told me and I also gathered the same thing from my parents. At the time I really didnââ¬â¢t understand why Mikeââ¬â¢s dad wasnââ¬â¢t around much and when he was I never really knew him to work although at the time it didnââ¬â¢t seem unusual to me. Most of the time when I was with Mike we generally played together as it was fairly infrequent that other kids played with just the two of us. As time went on the little I was around Mikeââ¬â¢s dad I did notice that there were times that he acted quite different, erratic, and sometimes he could be mean. I didnââ¬â¢t understand this because as of that time in my life I hadnââ¬â¢t been around someone like this. Mike always ââ¬Å"playedâ⬠it off about his dadââ¬â¢s ways when he acted like he did or if I would question it. I trusted Mike so I didnââ¬â¢t really think too much else about it. Although I mentioned that Mike and I generally played together there were times that we engaged together with other kids in the neighborhood. I began to notice that those other kids although were friends with Mike sometimes acted different towards him. I still didnââ¬â¢t have a clue as a kid what was going on in his household with his family as that was yet to come. I know that when we came around sometimes I could see the other kidââ¬â¢s parents look at Mike and were talking more privately or secretly. Eventually, all of these things began to make me wonder what others really thought about Mike and his family. My family and I both personally felt that Mike was a really good kid and his mom was of sound mind and character. We felt that his mom always wanted to make sure that Mike was doing well in school and that he didnââ¬â¢t get into trouble. I still didnââ¬â¢t have any other information about his dad to where I could make any different evaluation of him than what I already knew. Eventually Mike and I went to junior high and as we were getting older at least I knew a little more about life and family relationships. I began to question Mike about where his dad was at times and why I didnââ¬â¢t see him sometimes for weeks at a time. Mike always played things cool as to nothing was going on and that there were times that his dad would ââ¬Å"go offâ⬠to work and there was not any worries. I still noticed that the demeanor of our other friendââ¬â¢s parents changed when Mike came around and eventually they began to openly talk about Mike and his family when Mike wasnââ¬â¢t around. One day, a friend and I was riding our bikes over to Mikeââ¬â¢s house. We were riding down his street and we noticed two police cars sitting in front of his house. This really upset me because I felt that many of the school parents were putting Mike into the ââ¬Å"badâ⬠category just because of the problems his dad was dealing with. Eventually, we graduated from high school and Mike went on to get a college degree and a very successful job. I know now that Mike was being ââ¬Å"labeledâ⬠simply by the notion that he was a bad kid because of his dad and also because of the neighborhood that he lived in. Mike and I are still very good friends and I know that he has always walked the straight line even though his dad chose not to I have spoken since to some of the neighborhood parents about what they thought about Mike and his family growing up. All of them admitted to me that they were wrong in the way that they treated and perceived him for many years just based on his dad. This makes me think about how they would have treated Mike if he had simply lived in a higher class neighborhood and if they would have felt the same about him.

Initially, service animals were trained to help lead their blind owners through everyday tasks, from walking to work to negotiating around their homes. Called "guide dogs," many were trained by "Seeing Eye," Inc., and those dogs were known as "seeing-eye" dogs. Today, animals, not just dogs, provide a variety of services for the disabled and elderly. Guide dogs still help the blind, and service animals also are trained to help the deaf "hear," and aid wheelchair bound individuals by leading or pulling them, or helping them with balance and movement. They can also pick up and carry items, notify others if their owner is having a seizure, and even act as companions and therapy dogs for people with severe disorders such as autism. One expert writes, "Service dogs perform tasks such as operating light switches, retrieving items, pulling wheelchairs, and opening doors. Hearing dogs assist people who are deaf or hearing impaired by alerting them to sounds such as telephone rings, crying infants, alarms, and people calling them by name" (Henderson). Service animals are not pets, they are highly trained assistants who can make the difference between a disabled person living on their own or living in a group home or other assisted-living situation. Today, they are more than dogs. A variety of animals have been trained to assist the disabled, from miniature horses to pot-bellied pigs and beyond. The use of service animals is not a new idea. So, apparently, has understanding of its meaning. inculcate: to teach and impress by frequent repetitions or admonitions; urge on or fix in the mind; to cause (a person) to become impressed or instilled with something. Because inculcate is a transitive verb, someone or something inculcates something on, upon, in, into, or to someone: Teachers inculcate irregular verb conjugations in children by drilling the forms. Ministers inculcate religious principles into their congregations by way of sermons. Unscrupulous rulers inculcate feelings of helplessness and inferiority in their subjects. Inculcate derives from a Latin word meaning ââ¬Å"to stamp on or grind in with the heel.â⬠The ââ¬Å"culcâ⬠part comes from Latin calx, ââ¬Å"heel.â⬠The OED shows two examples of the word being used in the literal sense of treading something underfoot, but the figurative meaning of ââ¬Å"persistent repetition in order to instill something on the mindâ⬠is the meaning with which the word has been used since the 17th century. Until now. You know you have acculturated to Japan when you eat whatever is in front of you regardless of whether or not you recognize the food group it belongs to. The first was fear of interacting with patients in which nursing students talked about how they felt about their first interactions with patients. Those feelings included fear, anxiety, nervousness, and lack of confidence. They did not have the confidence in how they might respond to feel comfortable. They found that they were afraid to ask RN's on the floor and so they were dealing with these feelings alone. Developing confidence was a second issue in which nursing students felt insecure, however, most of them felt that if they performed skills well that their level of confidence improved rapidly and that this confidence then helped with their interactions with patients. Becoming aware of oneself was felt to be something that was needed in order to interact well with patients. These nursing students felt that they developed self awareness through : "reflecting on their thought, reflecting on an interaction with a patient, comparing their thoughts to the actions of another nurse, and seeing inner role conflict" (Idczak, 2007 pg. 69). Nursing students must connect their new found knowledge of the science of nursing with their need for the art of nursing and their ability to interact with patients.

Illegal activities and globalization With the increase in the globalization and the increase in the people travelling to the other destinations of the world, it has been seen that the criminal activates are also increasing day by day. The ease with which the people are able to cross the borders of the countries make the people perform some illegal activities including the illegal migrations, the human smuggling or the human trafficking. This list also includes the refugees which are able to cross the borders across to the other countries and they take their refugee in the other countries. Human trafficking: The case Friman and Reich (2007) discuss that there are two concepts that might be intermixed in this case. The first concept is called the human smuggling which is very different from the human trafficking. The human smuggling means that the person wants to be transported across the border illegally and the smuggler is paid some fee for that and after being transported illegally, smuggled person is free to do any thing in the other country. In the second case the human trafficking means that the person so the persons are transported across the borders, though illegally, in addition against the will and the wish of the person being transported. The people being transported are transported force fully. The reasons underlying human trafficking The human trafficking is done so that the people are forced into some illegal work forces. This includes the forced slavery, servitude or debt bondage. In this way the trafficker deprives the person of the basic human rights of the person who is being trafficked across the border.
